If you are like me it is highly probable that your success was enabled by somebody or a number of people along the way.
Thank them for believing in you by letting them know the positive influence they have had on your career and life.
Here are a few examples of those who believed in me:
A neighbor who had a summer home across the street who was extremely successful. I would hang out with them each summer when I was a little boy doing an occasional odd job around their lake home. Mr. Stipp had written a glowing letter of recommendation for me when I was first applying to college. I still have his letter.
My marching band director in college. Mr. Alexander taught all of us (a 300+ person marching force) more about discipline, precision and leadership than I ever would have expected. I learned as much about business in music as I did from my business courses. We were the most nationally televised marching band performing for NFL games, Bowl games and more in our time.
The President & CEO during my first major career. Jim went to bat for me a number of times exposing me to new and greater opportunities when I had little to no experience. What I cherish most from Jim is I learned to always begin and end everything with thanks.
I was fortunate later when I was the President & CEO in my next career to have so many wonderful board chairmen over the years. 6 chairmen in all. Thank you Rusty, Keith, Ed, Bill, Scott and Tammy for your support plus a little extra special thanks if I may to Bill.
I also learned as much from my employees, customers and partners around me – not only from those in leadership or management positions. And, of course, I am forever grateful to my closest and tightest circle of all – my family and friends who have been there for me day in and day out.
Chances are very good that if you are reading this blog you have influenced my life in more ways than you know. THANK YOU!
At some point we were all unknown and unproven and people like the above helped us along the way. Please let them know how grateful you are to them.
If you accept my challenge to reach out and thank I am certain they will feel great, you will feel great and I will too because this blog will have made a difference.
This article was inspired by Don MacPherson. Don had written a blog just like this and I thank you Don for allowing me to borrow your idea to share this with others in my network.
With great gratitude and respect,
