FOCUS: What Should I Be Working ON Right Now?

By Greg Niemi . October 22, 2015

How do I balance my short term demands along with my with long term priorities? How Do I Know What I Should BE Working On Right Now?

The quick answer is to remain focused.  Have clarity on what you should be working ON right now and be okay with saying NOT NOW to all others.

I realize this may be “easier said, then done” yet, I know we cannot not disagree with this.  Focus is everything.  So how do I know what I should be working ON right now?

I am about to share with you one of the best practices I shared with participants in a recent webcast of mine.

Many of us have heard of a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) Analysis.  My best practice is a MINI-SWOT analysis.

Rather than generate a laundry list, or flipcharts upon flipcharts, of items.  My methodology is to develop the short list.  Less provides more … FOCUS!

This is the 3-step process, which you can do very quickly.  The quicker the better:

1.  Write down only your top 3 Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Write down those items which come to top of mind.  That’s 12 items max.

2.  Begin with your Weaknesses and Opportunities. Strike through Strengths and Threats.  That shrinks list from 12 to 6 items.  Ahhh :-).

3.  Now, place an asterisk (*) by the one Weakness and the one Opportunity which provides your with the greatest gain. The list has shrunk to your 2 most important items.  Easily and rapidly.

FOCUS on these two items and know it is absolutely okay to say “not now” to everything else (until these two priorities have been addressed).  Then you may move onto the others in the list. How to prioritize What I Should I be Working ON Right Now?

Shown here is a sample of a finished MINI-SWOT.  Plus follow this link to the recording from my webcast which will guide you thru this process step-by-step.

This best practice is a sure fire way to answer quickly what you should be working ON right now.  Apply your focus and resources here and enjoy the result of your efforts.
