I am frequently asked “where is the best place to obtain financing (i.e., capital)”; is it a bank, credit union, private equity, angel investors, paid in capital, subordinated debt or etcetera. Of course, the answer varies depending on the need and situation.
Regardless of the source of financing there are three things every investor wants to know before they will lend you any money. And, we need to be prepared to answer these questions quickly and thoroughly.
It is in our best interests to build a compelling case BEFORE approaching potential investors. Your compelling case begins with an executive summary, “a one pager” which quickly answers these questions.
The one pager is to quickly grasp the interest of the lender to create the desire to learn more. Beneath the executive summary, your compelling case then provides additional layers of supporting information and justification for the financing opportunity.
Put on your hat to think like a banker or other investor and you will dramatically improve your ability to obtain the financing you desire.
